Interlocking Cement Concrete Block Pavement

Cement Concrete Block Pavement

Interlocking Concrete Block Pavement (ICBP) has been widely used in numbers of countries for its numbers of advantages and specialized problem solution for pavement where conventional types of pavement not suitable

Interlocking Concrete Block Pavement (ICBP) normally used in footpaths, parking location etc but in nowadays ICBP widely adopted in construction activity where Traditional construction of pavement using cement concrete or bituminous or brick pavement is not desirable

Use of Interlocking Cement Concrete Block Pavement

Precast Interlocking cement concrete block pavements are used in the following locations are:
  • Non traffic area like Pedestrian footpaths, malls, garden, terminus, platform etc
  • Parking area like car parking, rural roads, residential roads, office etc
  • Heavily trafficked locations such as ports, harbour, container terminals, service stations, city roads etc
  • Roads (normal area)
  • Desert roads
  • Locations subject to settlement
  • Locations where utilities are laid underground
  • Airfield taxiways and aprons

Advantages of concrete block paving

ICBP has many Different kinds of advantages compared to traditional methods which are:

The use of Interlocking cement concrete block pavements paving technology increasing very rapidly during the last two or three decades. Because of the following kind of advantages provided by the pavement technique:

Installation

  • Ensures mass production under factory conditions Consistent high quality blocks Dimensional accuracy so easy to install with high specification
  • No need of curing so that it comes in operation immediately after placing block or construction
  • No need for costly equipment because it also done with unskill labours
  • Any kind of shape useable as per required with specifications

Strength and Durability

  • It is generally used for locations where frequent repair work or remodelling of services and utilities becomes necessary So that it is very useful for city streets
  • Useful for locations where settlements normally happen, the blocks can be taken out and replaced
  • The blocks have a high resistance capacity to wear, thus making them suitable for heavy traffic
  • Since concrete is unaffected by oil spillage, the specification is mostly used for parking areas, bus stops, bus stands, bus depots and airfield taxiways and aprons
  • it has the ability to higher tolerates deflection without damaging any kind of structure failure

Aesthetic

  • The blocks can be designed and made to any desirable shape, pattern and colour, rendering the pavement aesthetically attractive
  • Blocks are manufactured in the factory with the controlled conditions so that ensuring good quality and speed of construction
  • Also, use as permanent marking by using colour block

Economy

  • Cheap due to mass production in the factory
in sort way
  1. Construction is fast
  2. Easy to maintenance
  3. Economical
  4. No time need for setting up
  5. High drainage capacity
  6. Mass production

Disadvantages of Interlocking Cement Concrete Block Pavement

  • Quality control of blocks in factory premises a Prerequisite for sustainable "ICBP"
  • The surface may be deflected because of deviations in base layers profile so that extra care needed to repair the same parts of it
  • Not suitable for high design speed more than 55-60 km/h

Construction practice

  • The blocks are laid over a layer of sand which thickness is only 30—50 mm, Which in turn is laid over a base layer of lean concrete, granular material, cement-bound material etc

Details of bedding of concrete blocks

  • The sand layer needs to be confined by means of edge supports for retaining sand in layer
  • Afier the blocks are laid by hand, they are compacted into the sand by any compactor
  • The open spaces in the joints are filled by fresh sand
  • The width between the joint itself should not be more than 5 mm
