Factors affecting in Embankment Design

The most important various elements in embankment design are as follow:

Top Width (Roadway)

The standards for roadway Width as per the Indian practice are For roads which has more than two lanes road for traffic movement, the roadway Width has to be worked out to suit the number of lanes, medians (if any) and shoulders


The height of the embankment is decided on the basis of the selected vertical profile

The height of embankment irrespective of ground water conditions should normally never be less than 0.6 meter

in areas where the ground is likely to be inuundated due to floods or standing water in  agricultural field, the embankment height is do selected that the bottom of the pavement is atleast minimun 0.6m, preferably 1.0m, above the level of water table or hieght flood level in sands and 3m is sandy clays

Side slopes

A flatter slope is to be preferred from the viewpoint of erosion control but involved more of earthwork

Flat slopes of embankment also promote the safety of traffic. flatter slopes recommended from the safety point of considerations
